continuous variation

Slight difference of an individual characteristic, such as height, across a sample of the population. Although there are very tall and very short humans, there are also many people with an intermediate height. The same applies to weight. Continuous variation can be due to the influence of many, rather than a single, gene, or from the influence of individuals' environments.
