conurbation

Large continuous built-up area formed by the joining together of several urban settlements. Conurbations are often formed as a result of urban sprawl. Typically, they have populations in excess of 1 million and some are many times that size; for example, the Osaka–Kobe conurbation in Japan, which contains over 16 million people.
