cor anglais

Musical instrument, an alto oboe, pitched a fifth lower (in F) than the oboe. It has a distinctive tulip-shaped bell and produces a warm nasal tone. It is heard in Rossini's overture to William Tell(1829), and portrays a plaintive Sasha the duck in Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf (1936).

The cor anglais has many famous solos in the orchestral repertoire, including the Cesar Franck symphony, Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique (1830), Dvořák's New World symphony (1893), Sibelius's tone poem The Swan of Tuonela (1895), and the famous tune in the slow movement of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez (1939).
