corneal graft

In medicine, the replacement of a damaged or diseased cornea by a cornea from a human donor. Indications for corneal grafting include severe corneal scarring as a result of herpes virus infections, alkali burns, or eye injuries. Rejection of the corneal graft may occur due to stimulation of the immune system of the recipient by foreign proteins of the donor. Rejection results in oedema (fluid accumulation) and poor vision.
