Corning

City in southwestern Iowa, USA, on the East Nodaway River, 97 km/60 mi southeast of Council Bluffs; population (1998 est) 1,800. The town was incorporated in 1871 and became the seat of Adams county in 1872.

During the late 19th century, a French communal society called the Icarians set up an agricultural commune in Corning. They arrived in the USA in 1848 and took over Nauvoo, Illinois, from the Mormons in 1849, moving to Corning in 1860. The Icarian research centre is now situated there.

Corning

City in Steuben County, south-central New York, USA, on the Chemung River, 16 km/10 mi north of the Pennsylvania border and 24 km/15 mi northwest of Elmira; population (1990) 11,900. A leading manufacturer of technical glass, it now produces Steuben and flat glass, tubing, bulbs, homewares, fibre-optics, and aerospace equipment. Other industries include foundry products and air compressors.

Corning Glass Works, the city's largest industry, was established in 1868 as Brooklyn Flint Glass Works. The Corning Glass Center (1951) houses a collection of historic glass. Over 2000 buildings were destroyed in the city by floodwaters in June 1972. The town of Corning (population (1990) 6,400) surrounds the city.
