corridor, wildlife

Route linking areas of similar habitat, or between sanctuaries. For example there is a corridor linking the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania. On a smaller scale, disused railways provide corridors into urban areas for foxes.

Corridors are anything from a few metres to several kilometres in width. The Grider Creek corridor connecting two areas of forest wilderness between the extreme north of California and southern Oregon is 5.5 km/3.5 mi wide and 26 km/17 mi long. The wider the corridor is the greater its conservation value as it will provide additional habitat rather than just a travel route. Corridors have been criticized as pathways for diseases and new predators.
