cotangent

The cotangent of angle β is equal to the ratio of the length of the adjacent side to the length of the opposite side.

In trigonometry, a function of an angle in a right-angled triangle found by dividing the length of the side adjacent to the angle by the length of the side opposite it. It is usually written as cotan, or cot and it is the reciprocal of the tangent of the angle, so that cot A = 1/tan A, where A is the angle in question.
