counterfeiting

Fraudulent imitation, usually of banknotes. It is countered by special papers, elaborate watermarks, skilled printing, and sometimes the insertion of a metallic strip. Forgery is also a form of counterfeiting.

In 1994 $25 million of counterfeit bills were passed to the US public; $183 million was seized by the Secret Service before it was passed (75% of this overseas). By July 1995 $15 million in counterfeit bills had already been passed since the beginning of the year.
