Greed

Silent film released in 1924, written by Joseph Farnham and June Mathis and directed by Erich von Stroheim. It is a relentlessly cynical depiction of the gradual moral and physical disintegration of two men and a woman over money (a lottery win).

Originally running for over 10 hours, the eventual two-hour epic, with its visual poetry derived from its San Francisco and Death Valley locations, is von Stroheim's most acclaimed achievement.
