crannog

Artificial island and lake dwelling found in Ireland and southwestern Scotland. Some crannogs date from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods (Middle and New Stone Ages), but most belong to the Iron Age and early Christian eras.

The timber buildings were erected on a platform of tree trunks, which was often secured by brushwood to a pile foundation in the lake or marsh and raised by successive layers of stone rubble. About 400 crannogs are recorded in Ireland.
