Crissa

Town in ancient Greece, situated southwest of Delphi near Mount Parnassus. Remains of its old walls still exist.

Some have identified Crissa with Cirrha, but the general opinion is that Cirrha was its port on the Crissaean Gulf. The inhabitants of these towns demanded heavy tolls from pilgrims visiting the Delphic oracle and this led the Amphictyonic League (the confederacy which administered the upkeep of the temple of Apollo at Delphi) to declare war on them about 595 BC and they were eventually destroyed. The Crissaean plain was declared sacred to Apollo and its cultivation forbidden.
