The critical angle is the angle at which light from within a transparent medium just grazes the surface of the medium. In the diagram, the red beam is at the critical angle. Blue beams escape from the medium, at least partially. Green beams are totally reflected from the surface.

In optics, for a ray of light passing from a denser to a less dense medium (such as from glass to air), the smallest angle of incidence at which the emergent ray grazes the surface of the denser medium – at an angle of refraction of 90°.

When the angle of incidence is less than the critical angle, the ray passes out (is refracted) into the less dense medium; when the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle, the ray is reflected back into the denser medium (see total internal reflection).

Evanescent Wave-Based Fiber-Optic DNA Biosensors Light transmits through fiber with different refractive index (n2<ni) at an angle beyond the critical angle for Total Internal Reflection (TIR), it will produce a limited attenuated electric filed transversely transporting though the side of fiber to form an evanescent waves (EW) that the intensity of evanescent waves decreases exponentially with short distance from the interface (see formula).
A critical angle was identified at which the crack propagation rate for the identified at which the crack propagation rate for the opening and shearing modes is equivalent.
Italica's format will still be extremely rich and varied: besides articles on Italian culture, literature, art, philology, history, cinema, language, linguistics--open to all methods, theoretical critical angles and scholarly approaches--we will continue publishing sections devoted to debate current or theoretical issues, as well as to interviews and translations.
