critical reaction

    0.03 sec.

critical reaction

In a nuclear reactor, a self-sustaining chain reaction in which the number of neutrons being released by the fission of uranium-235 nuclei and the number of neutrons being absorbed by uranium-238 nuclei and by control rods are balanced. If balance is not achieved the reaction will either slow down and cease to generate enough power, or will build up and go out of control, as in a nuclear explosion. Control rods are used to adjust the rate of reaction and maintain balance.
