violet

Plant of the genus Viola, family Violaceae, with toothed leaves and mauve, blue, or white flowers, such as the Canada violet V. canadensis and primrose violet V. primulifolia of North America and the sweet violet V. odorata of Europe. The pansy is also a kind of violet.

Violet

Town in St Bernard Parish, southeast Louisiana; population (1990) 8,600. It is situated on the east bank of the Mississippi River, 16 km/10 mi east-southeast of New Orleans, at the west terminus of the Lake Borgne (or Violet) Canal, which connects the Mississippi with Lake Borgne. Its economy is largely maritime, and is dependent on fishing and seafood packing.
