Cubes and cuboids are both six-faced solid shapes. The faces on a cube are all squares while the faces on a cuboid are all rectangles.

In geometry, a solid shape whose faces are all squares. It has 6 equal-area faces and 12 equal-length edges.

If the length of one edge is l, the volume (V) of the cube is given by:

V = l³

Its surface area (A) is calculated by finding the area of one square:

l × l = l²;

and multiplying it by 6:

6 × l²

A = 6l²

For example, if the length of the sides of a die are 1.2 cm:

V = l³ = 1.2³ = 1.728 cm³

A = 6l² = 6 × 1.2² = 8.64 cm²

Any value multiplied by itself is a square. If that value is multiplied by itself and then by itself again, it is termed a cube. Squares and cubes are represented by the exponent powers 2 and 3 respectively. The reverse operations to squaring and cubing would be finding the square root and finding the cube root.

In arithmetic, to multiply a number by itself and then by itself again. For example, 5 cubed = 5³ = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125. Alternatively, the cube root of 125 is 5. The term also refers to a number formed by cubing; for example, 1, 8, 27, 64 are the first four cubes.
