Curaçao

The principal industry, dating from 1918, is the refining of Venezuelan petroleum, though in recent years tourism has also become important. Curaçao was colonized by Spain in 1527, annexed by the Dutch West India Company in 1634, and gave its name from 1924 to the group of islands renamed the Netherlands Antilles in 1948. Its capital is the port of Willemstad.
