cyanamide process

Process used in the manufacture of calcium cyanamide (CaCN2), a colourless crystalline powder used as a fertilizer under the tradename Nitrolime. Calcium carbide is reacted with nitrogen in an electric furnace.

CaC2 + N2 → CaCN2 + C

The calcium cyanamide reacts with water in the soil to form the ammonium ion and calcium carbonate. The ammonium is then oxidized to nitrate, which is taken up by plants. Calcium cyanamide can also be converted commercially into ammonia.
