cyclamate

Derivative of cyclohexysulphamic acid, formerly used as an artificial sweetener, 30 times sweeter than sugar. It was first synthesized in 1937.

Its use in foods was banned in the USA and the UK from 1970, when studies showed that massive doses caused cancer in rats.
