cycloid) The cycloid is the curve traced out by a point on a circle as it rolls along a straight line. The teeth of gears are often cut with faces that are arcs of cycloids so that there is rolling contact when the gears are in use. In geometry, a curve resembling a series of arches traced out by a point on the circumference of a circle that rolls along a straight line. Its applications include the study of the motion of wheeled vehicles along roads and tracks. |
