D'Amboise, Jacques

D'Amboise, Jacques (1934– )

US ballet dancer and choreographer. In 1949, he joined the New York City Ballet, dancing leading roles for 30 years. He began choreographing in 1963. He formed the National Dance Institute in 1977 to teach dance to children in inner-city schools. In 1998 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.

He was born in Dedham, Massachusetts and trained with the School of American Ballet. His lead performances include such George Balanchine classics as Apollo. The winner of a MacArthur Foundation award, he trained and staged performances involving over 100,000 children nationwide.
