daimon

In Greek mythology and thought, a supernatural power, sometimes associated with the individual fates of human beings; a guardian spirit.

Socrates used the name ‘daimon’ for the voice of conscience or an instinct guiding each person to fulfil his or her destiny; later writers have taken it to personify inspiration. The word ‘demon’ is derived from it but a daimon was not thought to be malevolent.

Diamond and North Wind, and old Diamond for that matter, representing not so much distinct entities as degrees in the Chain of Being, North Wind--Diamond's daimon and ipso facto his entelechy, the vital force that directs him to self-fulfillment--is what Diamond will become (as Diamond is what she once was).
