database management system

Suite of computer applications allowing the user to store and manipulate database information. Database management systems range from small programs run on a personal computer to large complex systems run on mainframe computers. Information is retrieved from a database by a request known as a query. This is a stylized way of asking for information from the database. The set of rules for framing a query is known as a query language of which there are several, the most common being structured query language (SQL).
