de Tolnay, Charles Erich (1899-1981)

Hungarian-born US art historian and painter. He gained a PhD from Vienna, continued his studies at the University of Rome, and worked as a lecturer in art and archaeology at many institutions in Europe and the USA, eventually settling in Italy.

He was born in Budapest and studied at the Universities of Berlin, Frankfurt, as well as Vienna and Rome. He emigrated to the USA, and became a US citizen in 1945. He taught at the Sorbonne, the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, and in Germany and Italy. As a scholar he is most noted for his History and Technique of Old Master Drawings (1943) and for his six-volume study of Michelangelo (1943-67).
