de l'Orme, Philibert (c. 1505/10–1570)

French architect. He is remembered principally as the author of two important architectural treatises, Nouvelles Intentions (1561) and Architecture (1567). His building work includes the tomb of Francis I in St Denis, begun in 1547, and extensions to the Château of Chenonceaux in the Loire Valley (1556–59), including the first storey of the picturesque covered bridge.

Born in Lyons, he was trained by his father as a builder, studied in Italy 1533–36, and returned to France about 1540. He was given charge of the work at Fontainebleau in 1548; extended the palace of the Tuileries (1565), with Jean Bullant (died 1578); and also designed the chateaux of St Maur-des-Fosses (c. 1540) and Anet (1547–56).
