decathlon

Two-day athletic competition for men consisting of ten events: 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 metres (day one); 110-metre hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1,500 metres (day two). Points are awarded for performances, and the winner is the athlete with the greatest aggregate score. The decathlon is an Olympic event.

AS A LONGTIME, slightly obsessive, and wide-ranging sports fan--as a kid, I maintained basement shrines to an international all-star team that included the likes of baseball Hall of Famer Eddie Murray, NFL placekicker Garo Yepremian, French cyclist Daniel Morelon, Olympic decathlete Nikolai Avilov, and soccer immortal Pele--I'm especially happy to introduce this issue of reason, which contains a couple of great stories about the intersection of athletics, politics, and American culture.
An Olympic decathlete who died in 1987, Waddell launched the games in San Francisco in 1982 and 1986; they've been held in a different city every four years since.
