deep litter

System of winter bedding for cattle. Instead of clearing out soiled bedding material the farmer adds new layers regularly in order to build up a thick, warm bed.

The bedding material can be straw, shavings, or sawdust. Much of the warmth derives from rotting manure beneath successive layers, which may be up to 3 ft/90 cm deep by the end of the winter.
