Licking

River flowing through eastern Kentucky, USA; length 515 km/320 mi. It rises in Magoffin County and joins the Ohio River opposite Cincinnati, Ohio. The Licking was an important route for American Indians and early European settlers.

Course

From its source, it flows northwest through Cave Run Lake in the Daniel Boone National Forest, then past Blue Licks Spring to the Ohio between Covington and Newport.

The river's North Fork (130 km/80 mi long) rises in Fleming County and joins the main stream at Licking, southeast of Falmouth. The South Fork is formed in Bourbon County by the confluence of Stoner and Hinkston creeks, and flows generally north, past Cynthiana, to join the main branch at Falmouth.
