deme

In ancient Greece, the district inhabited by a group that formed an independent community. These small communities gradually became joined together into larger ones, and the word came to signify a country district, a township, or a parish. The 139 demes of Attica were the basic units of the government of Attica as remodelled by the Athenian statesman Cleisthenes 508 BC.
