denotation

The literal or dictionary meaning of a word. This is in contrast to a word's connotation, or implied meaning. The word ‘home’, for example, literally refers to a house or a dwelling, but is also used to imply a sense of comfort or familiarity. The difference between these two meanings represents the denotative and connotative uses of the same word.
