deontology

Ethical theory that the rightness of an action consists in its conformity to duty, regardless of the consequences that may result from it. Deontological ethics is thus opposed to any form of utilitarianism or pragmatism.

By contrast, Cardinal John O'Connor succinctly formulated the deontological stance of the Catholic Church as follows: "Is cloning human beings morally permissible?
The first is deontological and is grounded in the principle of egalitarianism or equal opportunity (Monroe, 1972; President's Commission on Higher Education, 1947b).
It has acquired its present-day connotations largely since the time of Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) and John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) as a result of the philosophical traditions, of deontological and utilitarian ethics respectively, that they brilliantly pioneered.
