depressed area

    0.01 sec.

depressed area

Region with substandard economic performance, perhaps as a result of a change in industrial structure, such as a decline in manufacturing industry. An example in the UK is Clydeside, where traditional heavy industries have closed because of reduced demand and exhaustion of raw materials (such as coal and iron ore). Depressed areas may be characterized by high unemployment, low-quality housing, and poor educational standards. Government aid may be needed to reverse such decline.
