desalinationRemoval of salt, usually from sea water, to produce fresh water for irrigation or drinking. Distillation has usually been the method adopted, but in the 1970s a cheaper process, using certain polymer materials that filter the molecules of salt from the water by reverse osmosis, was developed. As now envisioned, water would be raised 170 meters at Aqaba, in Jordan, and allowed to fall 400 meters near Jericho, producing the electrical power to desalinate the sea water. Water 2025 looks to technology to purify and desalinate water, making currently unusable sources available for human use. The cost to desalinate salt water is dropping, but only to the extent that it can be considered for potable uses in the home. |
