determinismIn philosophy, the view that every event is an instance of some scientific law of nature; or that every event has at least one cause; or that nature is uniform. The thesis cannot be proved or disproved. Determinism is also the theory that we do not have free will, because our choices and actions are caused.

| I choose to be gay and prefer that the biological determinists quit speaking for all gays. But people who were once "soft" determinists are now getting a bit "harder" (pardon the pre-feminist, Viagra metaphor) as they reconsider whether communications technologies do, in fact, shape media messages. But the British school of historical idealism that arose in this century was as opposed to counterfactuals as the determinists. |
