toxicology

Branch of medicine dealing with the study of poisons. This includes the chemical nature of poisons, their origin and preparation, their physiological action, tests to recognize them, pathological changes due to their presence, their antidotes, and their recognition by post-mortem evidence.

Massaro (1997) This handbook covers some of the most important topics in modern toxicology, answering questions and providing data in the following five areas of the field: * metals toxicology, * nutritional toxicology, * inhalation toxicology, * immunotoxicology, and * reproductive and developmental toxicology.
As some background, I currently serve as program director of the Environmental Diseases and Medicine Program, chief of the Laboratory of Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology, and chief of the Receptor Biology Section at the NIEHS.
