device driver

In computing, small piece of software required to tell the operating system how to interact with a particular input or output device or peripheral.

Much work has been done to standardize devices and their interfaces to eliminate the need for individual device drivers. Peripherals such as CD-ROM drives, for example, work with a single standard device driver (in Microsoft Windows, MSCDEX.EXE). Other devices, such as modems and printers, still need an individual driver tailored to work with that specific model.
