devil rayAny of several large rays of the genera Manta and Mobula, in which two ‘horns’ project forwards from the sides of the huge mouth. These flaps of skin guide the plankton, on which the fish feed, into the mouth. The largest of these rays can be 7 m/23 ft across, and weigh 1,000 kg/2,200 lb. They live in warm seas. Shields dropped to 6-8 after having become the first Devil Rays pitcher to start 4-0. But those at the Tampa Polytrauma Center got a great surprise June 23 when members of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays visited, bringing along autographed baseball bats and other memorabilia to make the smiles of the patients even brighter. The taxpayer also operated a minor-league baseball affiliate of the Devil Rays during 1995 and 1996. |
