| Levy of one in four males aged 10–20 taken by the Ottoman rulers from their Balkan provinces. Those taken were brought to Constantinople (modern Istanbul) and converted to Islam before being trained for the army or the civil service. This practice lasted from the 14th to the mid-17th century. |
