dhrupad

Vocal genre of north Indian (Hindustani) music, characterized by an extensive unmetred introduction (alap), a composed text setting of between two and four sections (sthayi, antara, and sometimes sanchari and abhog), and improvised development. Although less common than the khyal, it is considered to be the oldest variety of north Indian classical music still performed, and is highly prestigious.
