diamagnetic material

    0.01 sec.

diamagnetic material

Material that is weakly repelled by a magnet. All substances are diamagnetic but the behaviour is often masked by stronger forms of magnetism such as paramagnetic or ferromagnetic behaviour.

Diamagnetism is caused by changes in the orbits of electrons in the substance induced by the applied field. Diamagnetic materials have a small negative magnetic susceptibility.

These so-called diamagnetic materials have no permanent magnetic character but generate magnetism that opposes an applied magnetic field.
Unlike conventional magnetic bearings, SRI's patents cover the use of the passive magnetism supplied by permanent magnets stabilized with diamagnetic materials, thereby requiring no additional power to provide lift.
