diamond-anvil cell

    0.01 sec.

diamond-anvil cell

Device composed of two opposing cone-shaped diamonds that when squeezed together by a lever-arm exert extreme pressures. The high pressures result from applying force to the small areas of the opposing diamond faces (see pressure). The device is used to determine the properties of materials at pressures corresponding to those of planetary interiors. One discovery made with the diamond-anvil cell is MgSiO3-perovskite, thought to be the predominant mineral of Earth's lower mantle.
