terrapin

General name for any turtle that frequents fresh or brackish water. The name is sometimes specifically used for the tidewater diamondback terrapins (genus Malaclemys) of eastern North America.

Diamondback terrapins frequent some of the same shallow waters along the Atlantic coast as crabs do, and they are attracted by the same fish or other bait used in crabbing.
These wetlands provide crucial habitat for many species of concern to the State of Texas, including the brown pelican, the roseate spoonbill, the osprey, the piping plover, the least tern and the Texas diamondback terrapin.
