Galax

Town located on the Carroll-Grayson county line, southwest Virginia; population (1990) 6,700. It is 34 km/21 mi south-southeast of Wytheville. Founded in 1903, the town grew as a Norfolk and Western Railroad spur, shipping local wood, glass, textile, and dairy products. The town's name derives from the mountain evergreen, used in wreaths and other decorations. Galax is a country music centre.

Interest of foliage, as of Fern, Sempervivum, or Mossy Saxifrage; of habit, as tufted mats of Diapensia or irregular stems of Cotoneaster; or in fruits, as of Cornus canadensis, can always be employed to carry on the pictures when flowers are absent.
Still, the clusters of tiny white diapensia blooms, particularly on Katahdin, are spectacular.
Most common are diapensia, which grow in thick dark-green cushions with white five-petaled blossoms.
