diapirism

Geological process in which a particularly light rock, such as rock salt, punches upwards through the heavier layers above. The resulting structure is called a salt dome, and oil is often trapped in the curled-up rocks at each side.

It has been argued that three-dimensional views of seismic wave velocities (seismic tomography) do provide support for hot, low-density (low-velocity) diapirs (plumes) rising from the core-mantle boundary to the lithosphere below oceanic islands such as Hawaii and Iceland (Ji and Nataf, 1998; Bijwaard and Spakman, 1999; Zhao, 2001).
The slope is being extensively deformed by a mass of salt diapirs, or rising domes, which is wedging itself between layers of mud as it flows downslope.
The area is located approximately 170km southwest of the capital of Tunis in Northern Tunisia, and provides substantial coverage of the crescent-shaped, Jebel Kebbouch diapir extending southwest from its northeastern extremity to the northern and western boundaries of Kebbouch Sud, an exploration permit held by Breakwater Tunisia S.
