dietetics

Specialized branch of human nutrition, dealing with the promotion of health through the proper kinds and quantities of food.

Therapeutic dietetics has a large part to play in the treatment of certain illnesses, such as allergies, arthritis, and diabetes; it is sometimes used alone, but often in conjunction with drugs. The preventative or curative effects of specific diets, such as the ‘grape cure’ or raw vegetable diets sometimes prescribed for cancer patients, are disputed by orthodox medicine.
