direct mail

Solicited or unsolicited advertising sent via the Post Office letter service to individuals. Direct mail is used as a means of targeting potential customers effectively by making use of mailing lists that specify a range of criteria including age, income level, and profession; it is common, for example, in the selling of insurance, assurance, and loans to individuals. Direct mail is also known as ‘junk mail’. It is not a particularly effective means of advertising; the response rate is generally accepted to be around 2%.
