direct speech

Exact record of someone's words. When written, direct speech is indicated by quotation marks.

For example, ‘she said: ‘I will not accept the prize.’

Indirect speech (or reported speech) is a report of someone's words. When written, indirect speech is not marked off by quotation marks:

She said that she would not accept the prize.
