In the UK, the Peerage Act (1963) allows a peerage to be disclaimed for life provided that it is renounced within one year of the succession, and that the peer has not applied for a writ of summons to attend the House of Lords.

The disclaimer of a peerage is for life and is irrevocable. The children of a disclaimed peer may use their courtesy titles, and upon the death of a disclaimed peer the heir succeeds to the title. A baronetcy may not be disclaimed.
