Discovery

The ship in which Captain Scott sailed to the Antarctic and back in 1900-04, commanding the National Antarctic Expedition. Officially known as the Royal Research Ship (RRS) Discovery, it became a museum ship and resided at St Katharine's Dock, London, 1980-86, and at Dundee, Scotland, from 1986.

Third of the US space shuttles. It made its first flight on 30 August 1984 with a crew of six. Discovery took the second resident crew to the International Space Station in 2001. It was selected to make the first flight following the 2003 Columbia space shuttle disaster. The flight was made in July 2005 to the International Space Station.

In 1994 Sergei Krikalev of Russia became the first cosmonaut in a space shuttle on board Discovery, and John Glenn flew in it in 1998, becoming the oldest man in space.
