displacement activity

In animal behaviour, an action that is performed out of its normal context, while the animal is in a state of stress, frustration, or uncertainty. Birds, for example, often peck at grass when uncertain whether to attack or flee from an opponent; similarly, humans scratch their heads when nervous.

And don't waste your time with displacement activities, like moving your desk around.
Others are largely displacement activities, more for show than for utility, such as identity cards (to which the four successful bombers would have been entitled).
But mostly I left because Facebook's countless displacement activities, brilliantly attuned to the needs of the home worker, were, in fact, distracting me not so much from work, but from getting a life outside of work.
