disposable income

Income after direct taxes such as income tax and national insurance contributions have been taken away and state benefits such as unemployment benefit have been added on. For example, if a worker received £1,000 from an employer and £100 in child benefit but paid £200 in income tax and national insurance contributions then his or her disposable income would be £900.
